Erosion renders 250 families homeless

Erosion by the Teesta and Dharla rivers rendered at least 250 families in three upazilas homeless in the last three days.

The erosion-hit people of 20 villages have now taken shelter on the dyke of Water Development Board (WDB) in the district, said an official of WDB.

Teesta took a serious turn on Monday, devouring a number of homesteads and vast croplands at Kalmati village in Sadar upazila.

“My homestead was eroded by Teesta on Tuesday morning” said Abdar Hossain of Gokunda village in Sadar upazila .

Another victim Mobarok Ali of Chawratari village in the upazila said, more than 25 families in the area were rendered homeless by the River Dharla erosion during the period.Executive engineer of Lalmonirhat WDB Enayet Ullah said, the rivers devoured scores of homesteads, vast farmlands and orchards since Monday till yesterday.

We have already written to the higher authorities for funds to take immediate steps to check the erosion, he said.
