Tidal Surge In Bhola, Jhalakathi Districts: Over 60 villages flooded

Tidal surge under the impact of a full moon inundated over 60 villages in Bhola and Jhalakathi districts on Tuesday. Our Bhola correspondent reported that tidal surge hit around 40 villages in seven upazilas of the district. Water entered through the damaged portions of the embankment of the river Meghna in Sadar upazila, flooding Baliakandi, Tulatoli, Sahamadar, Cheuakhali, Dariram Shankar, Kalika Nagar villages.


The affected people have taken shelter on high lands in the area. They blamed the authorities concerned for not repairing the dyke damaged around a year ago. Bhola-Barisal highway in Parangong area under Kachia union of Sadar upazila has gone under water.


In Borhanuddin upazila, tidal water submerged nine villages in Boro Manika, three villages in Hasan Nagar, two villages in Kutuba, three villages in Tobgi and four villages in Pokkhiya unions. Water entered the villages as the river embankment at on Tuesday 12 villages of Baro Manika and Hasan Nagar unions. Water entered the villages as the river dyke at Miarhat point under Pokkhiya union collapsed on Tuesday afternoon.


Jahir Uddin Babar, chairman of Boro manika Union Parishad, alleged that cracks developed in the dyke a year ago, but the district officials of the Water Development Board didn’t take any effective measures to repair the dyke. Humaun Kabir, acting chairman of Pokkhiya union Parishad, said the embankment collapsed due to the negligence of the WDB officials as they didn’t take steps to save the dyke.


Borhanuddin Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jahangir Hossain and Upazila Parishad Chairman Jasim Uddin Haider visited the affected areas on Tuesday. They allocated 450 tonnes of rice for the fold-hit people. Villages in Cahchra and Chandpur unions of Tazumuddin upazila, Sayedpur and Bhabanipur unions of Daulatkhan upazila, Dholigour Nagar and Lord Hardinge unions of Lalmohan upazila, Madras, Mujib Nagar, Char Kukri Mukri and Dhalchar unions of Charfession upazila and all the five unions of Monpura upazila have been flooded.


Meanwhile, thousands of flood affected villagers from Kachia and East Elisha union gathered on Bhola-Barisal highways near Poranganj area yesterday morning and blocked the road for five hours, demanding repair of the damaged dyke. Our Jhalakathi correspondent adds: Tidal water inundated over 20 villages on both sides of Bishkhali River in four upazilas of the district yesterday.


Aman seedbeds on 1400 hectares of land have gone under water in the affected area, sources in the department of agriculture, Jhalakathi, said. Road communication with Bamana, Patharghata, Amua remained cut off for three hours from 1:00pm as the gang way of Amua ferry terminal was under water during the period.
